summer myth

I finally pulled a proof of the the Kiki Smith piece – My neck needed a break from slouching over the block for long periods of time. Besides the fact that she looks a little crossed eye (Minor fix. Sorry, Kiki.), I think I’ll be ready tomorrow to print of the final paper. The other drawing is a quick doodle with markers and a paint pen.

A few days ago, I saw the Summer Myth contest on Jillian Tamaki‘s blog and knew I had to give it a try despite feeling very rusty. My piece was inspired by summer nostalgia and the myth of nonstop recreation. I started out with water color drawings and I finished with Photoshop. Thanks Jillian for the highlight! The other pieces are amazing!

process

A few things I’m working on and process images of the shibori workshop last night. It was really nice to spend with my family and see my mom working on something for herself. She keeps putting off her own artwork, but I hope she’ll pick it up again.

portraits before bed

A few nights ago, BJ and I both started portraits before bed- his of B.I.G and mine of Kiki Smith. Totally spontaneous, but it was interesting to see each other’s creation the next morning. (Those highlights on BIG was made with powdered sugar!)

bob dylan

Happy belated Birthday, Bob Dylan! I remember you were all we listened to in art class some days.

I pulled this linoleum proof as a demo yesterday from an old block of mine. Can’t wait to do more this summer! One more weeeeeek.

creative slump

Trying to stay inspired and creating everyday is hard. It is a constant struggle to break through the creative slump. I’ve spent long periods of time in front of the computer, overwhelmed by all the imagery.  And then I saw my sister’s illustrations ….

Which gave me a kick in the butt to pick up a pen. Whether it’s random doodles, rendering empty drink bottles, or working from photos off Photobooth, I need to start making it a routine to sketch!

Wittgenstein

Wittgenstein- part of an ongoing series of portraits for a friend. Philosophy isn’t my strong point, but it’s interesting to find fun facts about each person when I’m gathering ideas. Like Wittgenstein- Did you know Klimt painted a famous  portrait of his sister for her wedding(If you look above the ear, you can spot the top of the painting)?  For me, these little things make them a little more accessible and human.

Gratitude

Thank you Jennifer, Megan, and everyone for the sweet comments/posts about the brooches! I always find it hard to find time outside of work to make my own things and when I do, they usually never get completed or see the light of day. Hopefully, the upcoming spring break can be devoted to troubleshooting and wrapping up these projects. I’ll probably be missing New York City during that time, since it’s been sort of a tradition to spend my break there (I guess it doesn’t help that I’ve been getting caught up on all the past Gossip Girl seasons). June birthday in NYC, maybe?

I made these watercolor paper cuts while brainstorming lessons for my students. We’ll see how they turn out. Now I have to make some more “masculine” examples for the boys :)
