transitioning

For me, summer is both relaxing and stressful. I have a hard time transitioning from working a high energy, fast moving school day to the slower pace at home. Finding things to do is not the problem – there are plenty of lessons to prep and personal projects that need attention. I easily get restless and managing time is something I’ve always struggled with and am still trying to figure out. Sometimes I wish I had people working around me to keep me motivate!

Besides playing around with jewelry, I’ve been interested in working with patterns. We got this little Marimekko cup recently, and I love the organic design. I signed up my mom, sister, and I for a shibori class this week, so I’m looking forward to learning something new.

coraline

We dog-sat this cutie, Coraline, last week and I really miss having her nap with me—toxic farts and all.

My film retrieval mission from the camera was kind of successful: once the lights were off and BJ threw the towel under the door, it felt like I was back in Photo I, fumbling and swearing at the film in the dark. The rest of the pictures that I took from our trip are here.

fast pace

Things have continued to move at a fast pace after the end of the school year. Can’t wait for a real break!

  • Added one more plant to the house. Plus, I love drinks + mint leaves.
  • Our friend, Ameet, generously gave us a whole box of his dad’s cameras to use.
  • A mess of necklaces- many unfinished.
  • A new away to organize masking tape.
  • Packing for Portland/Seattle.

good things

The good things that can get lost in the craziness …

A made bed, a trip to Sloan Hall where we picked up a piece from the Dream Collective aka my strawberry earrings and a shield pin for BJ, a resilient plant and organized home, afternoon naps, a gifted bowl from ND’s ceramic sale (Thanks, Tien!), shrimp tacos for dinner from Goop via L.A in Bloom, sisters sleeping over and a trip to El Bolillo for cheap, delicious pastries, taking my mom to see the MFAH Impressionist and Post Impressionist exhibit before it leaves, and a belated  Mother’s Day Cake from one of our favorite recipes -Orangette’s Marmalade Cake with extra orange and lemon juice)

refreshed

Sunday detour- Refreshed with shaved ice, ate lunch outside the Menil, and spent an hour wandering through the galleries.

feels like summer

Feels like summer is really here. I can’t believe we’ve lived in our area for almost a year and haven’t stopped by Mam’s House of Ice until this past Sunday. A small is plenty and for 2 bucks, these New Orleans style snow cones are by far the best I’ve had. I got lime and BJ got Tigerblood (good but a little too much coconut for him). The flavors are mixed in nicely so even at the last spoonful, you’re not left with just ice.

Next time, I’ll have to try a scoop of Bluebell ice cream at the bottom.

Stumbled upon a National Geographic Traveler walking tour of Houston Heights.

creative slump

Trying to stay inspired and creating everyday is hard. It is a constant struggle to break through the creative slump. I’ve spent long periods of time in front of the computer, overwhelmed by all the imagery.  And then I saw my sister’s illustrations ….

Which gave me a kick in the butt to pick up a pen. Whether it’s random doodles, rendering empty drink bottles, or working from photos off Photobooth, I need to start making it a routine to sketch!

Windy City Reverie

Our friends Andrew and Bridget were married on April 30th. Imagination and care could be discerned in every facet of their wedding: the words, the prayers, the places, the songs. It was a triumph. As a bonus, we got to see many of our favorite people in one of our favorite cities.

Of course, I forgot the camera charger and used my phone  as alternative for most of the trip. It ended working out. Enjoy!

More pictures from the trip here.

cone’s commute home

Lately, we’ve been getting our fill of Chick-fil-A cones. It’s ridiculous how happy it makes us. Feels like summer…

My cone’s commute home

Gimme more!

Henna courtesy of my students in our after school club. We had an Indian celebration with Bollywood music videos, samosas, curry, and lots of other goodies.
